The Delaware Bird-A-Thon is an annual fundraiser that raises money to purchase vital migratory shorebird habitat. The Delaware Bay shoreline is a major refueling stopover for migratory shorebirds, one being the Red Knot.

The Red Knot is a member of the Sandpiper species. The Red Knot migrates from Tierra del Fuego, Argentina in South America to their Arctic breeding grounds. This northern migration traverses over 9,300 miles with one stopover along the Delaware Bay. The Red Knot, along with other shorebird species, stops off at the Delaware Bay to feed on horseshoe crab eggs. Due to extensive commercial harvesting of horseshoe crabs, there has been a decline of horseshoe crab eggs, resulting in the Red Knot population plummeting.
